Accommodating Every Patient: The Importance of Bariatric Rooms in Healthcare Architecture

January 14, 2025 • Tiffany Todd

In the ever-evolving world of healthcare, patient-centered design has taken center stage. One area of focus that has seen significant advancements in recent years is the design of bariatric patient rooms.

Bariatric rooms are specifically tailored to meet the needs of patients of size—those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher—who now make up approximately 42% of adults in the United States.

The term ‘patients of size’ accounts for a patient’s weight, height and the distribution of the patient’s weight throughout the body. Rooms for patients of size go beyond traditional hospital spaces by incorporating features that ensure the safety, comfort, and dignity of both patients and healthcare staff. Wider spaces, reinforced furniture, and equipment like ceiling-mounted lift systems are critical elements. These rooms not only provide a safer care environment but also reduce the risk of injuries among caregivers by minimizing manual handling and supporting patients during mobility and transfers. WDM Architects is proud to lead the way in creating functional, safe, and dignified environments for these patients and their caregivers.

The importance of these systems cannot be overstated, particularly when considering the impact on nursing staff.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), over 50% of injuries among nurses are related to musculoskeletal disorders, many of which occur during patient transfers.

Handling patients without the proper equipment significantly increases the risk of these injuries, leading to higher rates of absenteeism, burnout, and staff turnover. By implementing ceiling rail systems and other patient-friendly features, healthcare facilities can protect their staff, improve job satisfaction and enhance retention. A safe working environment directly translates to better care for patients and reduced costs associated with staff injuries and recruitment.

Ceiling rail systems shown here in blue dotted lines allow for safe and efficient patient transfers from the bed to the toilet or shower.

At the Kansas Veterans Home and Kansas Soldiers Home, WDM retrofitted patient rooms with ceiling rail systems that allow for safe and efficient patient transfers from the bed to the toilet. This essential modification not only ensures patient dignity but also protects staff from potential injuries. Similarly, at the new patient wing currently under construction at Kearney Regional Medical Center, WDM has incorporated patient-of-size rooms into the design to address the growing demand for these specialized spaces.

Stan Landwehr,  a principal at WDM with over 30 years of experience in healthcare design, reflects on this evolution: “Early in my career, bariatric rooms weren’t much of a consideration. In fact, there weren’t even guidelines for these types of rooms until 2010. Now, hospitals and long-term care facilities recognize them as a necessity. These spaces make a tangible difference in patient care and staff safety, and I’m proud to see how far healthcare design has come.”

Bariatric and patient-of-size rooms are more than a response to a demographic trend; they represent a commitment to inclusivity and safety in healthcare environments. By designing these spaces with precision and purpose, WDM Architects helps facilities across the region adapt to the changing needs of their patients, ensuring that every individual receives the care and respect they deserve.
