Consolidate functions. Prior to building the new Hospital, the zoo’s animal care functions were previously disjointed, broken apart through a few different buildings. The main goal of the new building was to provide a modern animal care facility to consolidate all the functional areas together, allowing veterinary care to be provided as efficiently and effectively as possible. The new facility is a single building which includes: Hospital Clinical Core, Convalescent Ward, Quarantine, Necropsy and Staff offices. The layout requires fewer transfers and less movement of patients, aimed at creating less stress for animals, and less unnecessary work for staff.
Take advantage of the surrounding environment. The facility is on a beautiful site surrounded by mature trees, and is designed to emulate the WPA (1930’s Works Progress Administration) era stone and timber structures that are common in Tulsa’s Mowhawk Park. A porch wraps the entry, conference and office areas, providing a shady respite where staff can step out for some fresh air. Providing this necessary place to decompress is an important aspect of the zoo’s commitment to staff wellness.
Accommodate VIP tours. A vital part of the zoo’s mission is to provide unique opportunities for guests to learn more about the amazing care that is provided to the zoo’s residents. A sky-lit viewing gallery allows accompanied tour groups to be able to directly observe animals receiving care in the treatment and surgery rooms. This model allows an educator to always be present to explain the exams and procedures veterinarians are performing to better the lives of the animals in their care.
