About the Project
In the heart of Kansas’ historic “Post Rock Country,” downtown Sylvan Grove features native limestone buildings that reflect the area’s rural heritage and is listed on the State of Kansas Historic Register. One of the buildings, the Farmer’s Elevator, originally served as offices and a hub for agricultural supplies, complete with a drive-up service window and a nearby truck/grain scale.
Now renovated for adaptive reuse, the Farmer’s Elevator has been transformed into the Sylvan Grove Senior Center. The updated facility retains its historic charm with exposed lattice trusses and cut, rough-face limestone walls. The large display windows have been restored in both storefront bays. The Senior Center includes an activity area, social space, large event venue, a serving kitchen, ADA-accessible and additional restrooms, office space, storage, and an exterior patio.
Funded through grants and private donations, the project overcame Covid-related delays and supply chain challenges to become a valuable community resource that honors Sylvan Grove’s heritage.
