Shari Flaming Welcome Center at Tabor College

About the Project

The Shari Flaming Welcome Center at Tabor College was made possible by the generous donation of Chuck and Shari Flaming. The building is the newly combined home for the Office of the President, Admissions and Financial Aid departments.

The two-story building is situated along the south side of campus and is the new gateway between the community of Hillsboro and the College. The building is skinned with brick, stone and vertical ribbed metal panels, which pay homage to the neighboring library and student center.

When young adults and their families walk into the Tabor College Welcome Center, the space is designed to make them feel special and engaged, and to spark excitement and interest for the rest of the campus.

The entry lobby has a display case with the personal Bible and photos of Shari Flaming. Around the corner in the gallery, a graphic story wall tells the history and mission of the College. The gallery features a two-story high ceiling, modern pendant lighting, soft seating and a coffee bar. Clerestory windows and large glass openings on the south and north provide visitors with natural light and glimpses of the surrounding campus.

Interior finishes were chosen to create a youthful and inviting space that would also stand the test of time. Fun patterns are found in the casework, carpet and wallcoverings, but the neutral color palette ensures the space will not quickly become outdated.

Three conference rooms on the ground floor give prospective students and families a place to meet with admissions staff and tour guides upon arriving at campus. An open staircase with stainless steel cable railings leads to the second-floor reception area. The second floor contains offices and a 20-person conference room with a large window that provides an unobstructed view of the grand lawn to the north.
