About the Project
When WDM completed the exhibit in 2004, the Downing Gorilla Forest was one of only a few in the world that could house, manage and rotate groups of bachelor gorillas. This exhibit represents the Congo basin and the West African forest. The indoor viewing area includes interactive and interpretive displays that allow keepers to work individually with children and other visitors. Other species include okapi, DeBrazza and colobus monkeys, bongo antelope and African flamingos. A new “African village” provides guest services, including restrooms, vending, concessions, outdoor covered picnic pavilions and a children’s play area.
