About the Project

WDM was hired for this unique project that combines the services of the Kansas Humane Society and the City of Wichita Animal Services together on one campus. The two buildings— one civic and the other a non-profit—are located directly adjacent to one another to reflect the cooperation and coordination that takes place between the two entities.

A public plaza featuring public art and donor recognition joins the two facilities and defines the entry sequence for both. The essence of the building’s exterior features, while dynamic in form, has a subdued material palette appropriate for a civic building while still allowing for the vibrant and colorful interior desired by the non-profit organization. The combined campus includes a public off-leash dog park.

Upon entrance, visitors are surrounded by a fun and pet-friendly environment designed by WDM’s interior designers. Maintenance-friendly finishes with fun accents of color bring this space to life.
