About the Project
WDM renovated an existing exhibit for Matschie’s Tree Kangaroos, an AZA-designated SAFE species. The original exhibit yard had an open front, which limited climbing opportunities due to the risk of escape. New woven stainless steel mesh now completely encloses the habitat, and new artificial trees were added.
Native to Papua New Guinea, the tree kangaroos now have the benefit of the full vertical space, effectively doubling the useable volume. Partially roofing the yard creates a more protected environment with deeper shade, increasing comfort and encouraging more activity. Adjacent to the yard, a new 25-foot tall indoor habitat was added, allowing for more flexible animal management and year-round viewing.
