About the Project

The John Bardo Center is the cornerstone of the new Innovation Campus at Wichita State University. This hub for translational research brings together students, faculty, and the private sector to further technology-based economic growth in the region. The building is designed to evolve as academic programs and new technologies change.

With our associate architects, Perkins + Will, we created a bold composition of simple forms. A horizontal bar caps the building providing deep shade at the entry and great views from inside. A two-story lobby features glass curtain walls on the north and south. Two flanking wings house high bay lab spaces for a variety of engineering disciplines. The brick and metal exteriors of WSU’s campus are re-imagined and juxtaposed for an interesting contrast.

WDM’s interior designers used color, pattern and texture to offer a fun and engaging environment for all users. Also notable are the windows that not only allow connection to the outside but also allow views into the maker spaces to create a more inclusive learning environment.
