About the Project

The veterinary hospital is a modern medical treatment center housing a full range of spaces, including:

  • Surgical suite
  • Treatment room
  • Recovery rooms
  • Laboratory
  • Pharmacy
  • Necropsy lab
  • Staff offices

The medical center and its adjacent quarantine spaces allow the Zoo to provide complete medical care for nearly 800 animals in its collection.

The Blank Park Zoo and Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine have a cooperative program that enables students to work directly with exotic animals. Students may be on campus during a four-week rotation where they can be on-call. The veterinary hospital facility includes a small dormitory where students reside during the rotation. Additionally, overhead cameras mounted in key treatment areas allow students to watch procedures live from Ames.
