Community Architecture

Andover Public Library

About the Project

Andover’s Library Director and the Library Board wanted a completely new approach to making the facility relevant to library patrons. WDM was challenged to create a colorful space with a fun, welcoming atmosphere as opposed to the traditional, institutional feel of libraries of the past.

WDM chose to bring controlled natural light into the reading and activity areas and high open ceilings to give an airy feel to the volume. A coffee bar and an open, friendly reading area were incorporated to appeal to library patrons. Reading spaces specifically oriented to young children feature warm colors and playful elements that create a positive association with their early reading experiences at the library. Meeting rooms for community events are provided via a separate entrance so they can be used during off-hours.

Viewing lines and placement of workstations were carefully planned to assure security and control of spaces throughout the facility. Color and a variety of materials are carried to the exterior with a blend of metal, masonry, and tile surfaces like the blue tile wall at the main entry that simulates a waterfall.
