Bonobo Habitat Enhancement at Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is recognized as a leader in the care and management of bonobos, the least known and smallest of all ape species. Bonobos are the only great ape managed on an international scale and are the sole ape species recommended by the IUCN for captive breeding. With fewer than 100 individuals in the Species Survival Plan (SSP) and approximately 130 in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), bonobos remain critically rare in human care. The Columbus Zoo manages a significant portion of the U.S. bonobo population—15 individuals, or roughly 14%—including some of the most genetically valuable bonobos in the world, such as the last two wild-born males and the last two wild-born females in the country. The Zoo’s ongoing commitment to exceptional care and strategic management ensures the continued preservation of this important and vulnerable species.

Zoo leaders began work for a transformative renovation to enhance the indoor habitat for its bonobo troop—improving animal welfare, keeper management, and the visitor experience. Bonobos, close relatives of chimpanzees, are less aggressive and more arboreal, with complex social structures that shift frequently. Their previous indoor habitat, however, presented multiple challenges that hindered both animal wellbeing and effective care.

The original space included two dayrooms with concrete floors and CMU walls, outfitted with children’s playground equipment that detracted from a naturalistic presentation. The hard surfaces amplified the bonobos’ vocalizations, creating a challenging environment for both animals and staff. Furthermore, the climate-controlled indoor facility, necessary to maintain temperatures above 60°F for half the year, did not provide sufficient flexibility to manage the bonobos’ fission-fusion social dynamics.

The renovation addressed these issues through strategic design improvements:

  • Expanded spaces for better social group management
  • Improved acoustics with acoustic panels and a soft biofloor
  • Arboreal furnishings to encourage natural climbing behaviors
  • Upgrades to enrich the visitor experience

Expanded Spaces for Better Social Management

“The design of the new building offers much greater flexibility in how we move and manage the bonobos,” says Audra Meinelt, Curator, Congo Expedition and Orangutans at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Enhanced transfer aisles allow seamless transitions between spaces, enabling the Animal Care team to respond quickly to social changes or bullying incidents. Because bonobos naturally live in a fission-fusion society, the ability for them to choose who they want to be with is extremely important. The layout allows multiple movement options, which supports these social choices.

The addition of the transfer aisles has been especially impactful — it allows the bonobos to see where others are housed during the day, helping them make decisions about whom they want to interact with. This visibility empowers them to make more informed decisions about whom they wish to interact with, fostering more harmonious group dynamics and enabling the animals to manage their own relationships.

“The recovery chute we added to the building has been incredibly beneficial,” Meinelt adds. “It provides a safe space to recover bonobos post-anesthesia and allows us to reunite individuals in a controlled setting before transitioning them into larger spaces.”

In addition to better connectivity, the increased vertical volume of the space—accentuated by skylights—creates a light-filled, airy environment that benefits both bonobos and their caregivers. High-mounted firehose structures are a favorite resting and climbing spot for the bonobos, supporting their natural arboreal behavior and adding dimension to the habitat.

Improved Acoustics and Flooring

To create a calmer, more naturalistic environment, acoustic panels and a deep mulch biofloor were installed—dramatically reducing noise levels and enhancing the overall sensory experience for both animals and staff.

“The biofloors have been a big hit. They spend a significant amount of time sifting through the mulch in search of food,” says Meinelt.

The biofloor consists of a specialized three-foot-deep mulch layer over a concrete substrate. This system provides a softer, more natural habitat floor that supports the bonobos’ foraging behavior while offering critical benefits such as acoustic dampening and shock absorption for these active primates.

These upgrades have had measurable impacts on animal wellbeing. Stress indicators—such as blood pressure levels—have improved, and staff report a noticeable shift in the bonobos’ demeanor. When caregivers enter the space, the animals are more relaxed, with significantly fewer vocalizations or displays, even around unfamiliar personnel. The quieter, more comfortable environment benefits everyone in the building

Arboreal-Focused Furnishings

To promote natural behaviors, the redesigned dayrooms now feature elevated platforms and custom climbing structures that encourage the bonobos’ instinctive need to move vertically. Strung firehoses and other arboreal elements offer dynamic opportunities for climbing, swinging, and resting—closely mimicking the complexity of their wild habitat.

The free-hanging firehose structures have become clear favorites. Some are reinforced with PVC to provide the rigidity needed for swinging like vines, while others remain more flexible.

“They love twisting the hoses, hanging onto them, and spinning around as they unwind,” notes Meinelt. “We frequently see the bonobos engaging in games of chase and taking full advantage of the firehose structures for swinging, spinning, and twirling—activities that were not as common in the previous space.”

High benches integrated into the climbing structures also serve as preferred sleeping spots, giving the bonobos elevated places to relax and observe their surroundings—further supporting their arboreal lifestyle

Enhanced Visitor Experience

The renovated habitat offers guests a more authentic and engaging view of bonobos in an environment designed to support their natural behaviors and complex social dynamics. By mirroring elements of their native ecology, the new dayrooms provide richer educational experiences and foster a deeper understanding of this intelligent, lesser-known great ape.

Public feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Visitors frequently comment on the improved habitat and express appreciation for the chance to observe the bonobos engaging in such active, positive behaviors. The visibility of climbing, foraging, and social interactions adds depth to the guest experience and enhances appreciation for the species.

Adjusting to the new building required a period of adaptation for the Animal Care team. With a greater number of doors and movement pathways to coordinate, daily routines became more complex, and maintaining the taller spaces—often involving ladders—introduced new logistical challenges. Despite the learning curve, keepers agree the changes are well worth it. The opportunity to see the bonobos thriving—more engaged, active, and socially dynamic—makes the added effort rewarding and reinforces the value of the new design.

The Animal Care team notes that the bonobos are noticeably calmer, healthier, and more active in the upgraded space. This project has not only elevated the zoo’s standard of care but also reinforced the Columbus Zoo’s broader commitment to animal wellbeing and to creating meaningful connections between people and wildlife.
