Eaton Place

John B. Carey, an Irish immigrant and one-time mayor of Wichita, built this five-story Second Empire-style hotel in 1887 at a cost of $100,000. In 1999, MetroPlains Development purchased the square-block property and hired WDM Architects to renovate the property for mixed-used development consisting of 115 upscale apartments, 30,000 square feet of commercial space and a parking garage.

The historic work provided by WDM included: 410 historically accurate aluminum sash replacement windows; extensive brick and stone restoration; and wooden frames inlaid with glass. Public areas beaten down by time were restored to their original aura of old-time quality and luxury. The project also included four adjoining properties, plus a building addition and garage sympathetic to the historic environs context. The resultant project is a showcase for Wichita’s Old Town development and has received numerous awards for historic renovation and urban redevelopment.

Eaton Place qualified for Historic Tax Credits and Housing Tax Credits
